In December 2019, roughly four hundred thousand people descended on a tract of land on the outskirts of Riyadh for a three-day music festival that nobody quite knew how to categorise. Was it a concert? A cultural statement? An experiment? Producing a festival of this scale in Riyadh presented challenges that organisers in Europe or America rarely face. The heat required the construction of elaborate cooling systems across the outdoor stages. The demographics of the audience — many of whom had never attended a live music event — required careful thought about the festival experience from first principles. MDL Beast has since spawned Soundstorm — its flagship multi-day event — as well as Trek, an adventure festival in the mountains near Tabuk, and Base, an urban culture platform.
